BAY YOGA

Is it for you?

Yin yoga is a slow and stilling practice, which wonderfully complements the more dynamic styles of yoga and is the perfect antidote to urban life.

While faster, more muscular (yang) types of yoga emphasise internal heat and the lengthening and contraction of our muscles, yin yoga targets the deeper connective tissues – the ligaments, bones and joints – which aren’t normally exercised as much in more active styles of yoga.

Yin yoga works largely on the pelvis, hips and spine. Most postures are seated and we hold them for around five minutes.

While initially this style of yoga can seem quite passive or soft (even boring), there’s a deeply satisfying challenge in holding the pose.

Yin yoga is suitable for almost all levels of students and is something you really need to experience to know what it’s all about.

The benefits

Yin yoga gently opens your body to improve flexibility and release any mind-body stresses.

It cultivates a deep sense of awareness and encourages you to let go of nagging goals. The aim is to just ‘be’ in the pose, to find stillness and deep relaxation.
